In the category of "good though not exactly triathlon-specific upper body training," here's a view across the bow of the 18' canoe my father and I built 25 years ago from strips of red cedar. It's a little worse for the wear, but still the best-paddling canoe ever. The Kootenay stem (example shown in the photo below from a canoe-building web site...) helps lengthen the waterline and makes for straighter tracking. Nice.
I find that an hour of paddling relaxes and recharges muscles made tired by swimming.
